Expressions of solidarity and a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquake in Central Italy introduced, in the crowded City Council Chamber of San Martino Valle Caudina, the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of Lucio Dalla’s masterpiece, “Caruso”. Its première took place in front of two thousand people on 17th August 1986 in the Stage Area of the town, where a plate has been placed to commemorate the event. Perfect organisation by the new Municipal Administration chaired by Mayor Pasquale Pisano ensured the extraordinary success at the event: the emotional début of a traditional Neapolitan band with “Era de Maggio” and “Caruso”: Dalla’s favourite song by Salvatore Di Gicomo, and his masterpiece composed in Sorrento in the summer of 1986;  the acceptance of proposals made in the course of the evening by the Sorrentine writer, Raffaele Lauro, a honorary citizen of San Martino Valle Caudina, and Gianni Raviele, former head of the Cultural Division of TG1 and former president of the Pro Loco. A committee coordinated by the Councillor for Tourism and Entertainment, Francesco Bello, will be sworn in to create a provincial media centre dedicated to the life and work of Dalla; a national conference between San Martino Valle Caudina and Sorrento on “Dalla as a man, as a poet and as a musician”; a national poetry award “Poets for Music”; and, last but not least, the launching of the process of Valle Caudina’s recognition as a world heritage site, strongly advocated by Raviele. A standing ovation of the audience welcomed the great Russian dancer, Violetta Elvin, who enriched the event with her presence as the protagonist of the novel by Raffaele Lauro, “Dance The  Love - A Star in Vico Equense”, which was presented on this occasion. The young solicitor, Golda Russo, with her precise and rigorous analysis, mapped the human and artistic profile of Elvin, while in emotional way highlighting the affectionate bond, which consolidated between Lauro and the new generations of San Martino. Professor Rino Azan sparked a repeated spontaneous applause with a brilliant report-essay of great cultural and social depth on the new work of Lauro. Meaningful, focused and highly appreciated was the contribution of Prefect Matthew Piantedosi dedicated to the historical-political scenario of the novel, the clash between the two fierce dictatorships, Nazi and Stalinist, and the longing for freedom symbolized by the protagonist’s life choices. President of Città Caudina, Enzo Napoletano, who shared the proposals for the future, the commissioner of Avellino, Luigi Botte, Duke Giovanni Pignatelli della Leonessa and former administrators, Pasquale Ricci and Mimmo Petecca, were all present among the audience to confirm the experience of Dallian heritage as a resource for the whole community of San Martino Valle Caudina.
